A test route is not a licence entitlement. Required training and tests must still be completed.

A2 motorcycle limits—
Power-to-weight ratio—
Power ≤ 35 kW—
Ratio ≤ 0.2 kW/kg—
Original power ≤ 2 × current power—

35 kW is approximately 46.9 bhp, often rounded to 47 bhp. Use kW for the legal limit.

What this result means

A1 starts at 17: a motorcycle up to 125cc and 11kW, with a ratio no higher than 0.1kW/kg. A2 starts at 19: up to 35kW and 0.2kW/kg, and not derived from a bike with more than twice its restricted power. A 60kW bike restricted to 25kW therefore fails, even though its original output is below 70kW.

Category A direct access starts at 24. Progressive access starts at 21 after holding A2 for at least two years and passing the required practical test. The years field measures licence tenure, not time riding.

CBT, exceptions and Northern Ireland

CBT is normally valid for two years. Learner restrictions and exceptions depend on existing entitlements, including some older car licences. This tool does not assess those exemptions, tricycles or transmission restrictions. Read GOV.UK CBT guidance. For Northern Ireland use nidirect’s motorcycle rules.

Is my bike suitable for the riding test?

Road-riding category limits differ from test-vehicle minimum requirements. Confirm the exact model, restriction documentation and test suitability with your training school and DVSA’s test-vehicle guidance.
